Importance of cleaning
« on: February, 24, 2009, 12:08:22 PM »
Appliances that use water especially refrigerator always needs special attention. Cleaning them often would increase in the efficiency and longevity of them. And it also important to give them certain amount of rest as they are used to work continuously.

I'm curious - How do you mean that a refrigerator uses water, and how would you give a refrigerator rest?

maybe, he means to say fridge that gets water leaks like in the cold water and the upper part. that would result to staining. give refrigerator a rest; meaning turning it off if you have nothing really that needs to be stored longer than couple of days. 1 day would do, defrost can help save up energy.

I defrost the fridge once every couple of months, but I am always giving the interior a wipe down. I think it is so important to be hygenic where food is to be kept.

I defrost my fridge at least once a month.  I clean the exterior and interior as well removing all unnecessary stuff and forgotten leftovers.  This practice saves me on electric costs.

It sounds like he's talking about refrigerators with water dispensers and ice makers.  Other refrigerators don't use water.

Self defrosting refrigerators have a pan under them to catch fluids when they go through a defrost cycle. Often, people will think they have a leak when in fact, the pan has been moved and the water goes on the floor, missing the pan.

My fridge is on the blink and ices up no end which means I have to defrost it at least every couple of weeks...at least it gets a good clean out!
I have to agree though that it is a job that you should do...clean it out regularly as otherwise heaven knows what nasties may be growing inside!

now a days there are latest refrigerators which won't require a defrost. cleaning might be useful to avoid some peculiar odours.

hi antkmom! regarding your query...you may plan ahead if you see that ur ref needs some defrosting job. by this i mean not to purchase much stuff which would need freezing immediately until the ice inside the ref is melted all the way...or for thise which are already there when you planned to defrost, youmay decide to sponsor a cookfest.... 8)

Our fridge is a "frostless" model that has the pan underneath.  No need to set aside time to hack away ice.

Aren't all modern refrigerators self defrosting?  I haven't seen anyone perform a manual defrosting in years!

I never defrost the frig.  I do clean it out weekly to make sure nothing is growing in there.  It's amazing what my family puts in there.  My youngest is quite fond of putting toys in there.  And plastic balls, cat toys, doll babies.  She says she's hiding them from her sister.
