Pacifiers
« on: July, 07, 2009, 02:12:51 PM »
What are your thoughts on how long a baby should have a pacifier?

I can't stand it when I see toddlers talking and they still have the pacifier in their mouth.

I run a daycare and once they are 2 yrs old, they only get their pacifiers in bed.  At 3, they are gone.

As for m, until the baby' not crying, I don't take their pacifier. Is it a big deal?

Antk - I never gave my daughter a pacifier and what a mistake that was.  She sucked her thumb and to tell you the truth to this day when she is super tired- it goes in her mouth.  It's habit, although she pulls it right back out.  She is almost 13.  Grrrrr......

I wish I gave her a pacifier then she wouldn't have the tendency to do this.

I do agree though- enough is enough, I would say 3.  Pacifiers can ruin kids teeth, so you need to make them stop soon after getting their teeth.

I use them with my son, he loves his and I have no problem him using it all day long, he's 8 months and I'll let him use it till he no longer wants it, if it gets to the stage that he is over 2 I'll use it for bed times only and then work on taking it away.

I was at a track meet the other day and saw a boy who had to be at least 5 with a pacifier in his mouth!  I couldn't believe it!

All of my kids used them as babies.   I see no harm in them when you have a baby, but someone who can talk doesn't need a pacifier.

in my opinion i will not allow my kids to have that pacifier..and haven't seen my sister using it  on her children too..i don't its a good idea either..

We only allowed it for bed at about age 2 like you said. At about 2 and a half the pacifier went to the pacifier fairy so it could be given to some other little boy or girl who needed it.

I agree, I would only use it on babies, and if necessary - if the baby keeps crying or trying to suck their thumb. Age 2 would be the limit. The child is old enough to understand that pacifier is for little babies, and it is time to get rid of this "baby" habit. Most would cooperate just because of that - they don't want to be considered babies anymore. :)
