Adding some bling!
« on: February, 23, 2009, 12:54:14 PM »
There's nothing more boring than a regular square or rectangular deck,  Unfortunately, it is the easiest shape to install so if you want to jazz things up you have to add interest in other ways.

What are some of your favorite ways to spice up your deck?

I like the decks that have different levels and benches built into them.

A friend of mine built one that was pretty basic, but he spiced his up with a hot tub.

Lanterns are great if the deck is covered with a pergola like top.  Draping a few outdoor lights creates warmth without being overpowering, too.

I was going to say a hot tub, but Ricardo beat me to it.

I really like some planters with tropical or structural plant in them. Choose some really nice decorated pots.

You can even dress up a deck by the type of railing that you use.

We have a hot tub on our deck and then bought some nice patio furniture.  I always put candles around when we have company over to dress it up.

I also like the decks that are more then one level but they are alittle harder to build, so a nice railing would be a great asset.

While a hot tub might be fun, I would prefer it be inside the house instead of out in the back yard.

I think a fireplace or fire pit would be nice if it could be used safely.

The warmth would extend the "outdoor" season by several weeks.

We still need to renovate our home, but we do have great decks...four in all! The best two, although they are all very bland at the moment, needs nothing added as we have magnificent sea views from both!
A few potplants on the table and the barBQ do very nicely!
Later however...a hot tub would be wonderful!  8)

I love plant hangers on a deck.  Brackets for hanging plants off the railings, pillars added to hand hooks for hanging baskets.  There's even brackets and planters that fit right onto the railing of the deck.

I had a very boring, rectangular deck at my townhouse.  I broke up the mundane with planters, hanging baskets, wind chimes and cute decorations in the potted plants to add some variety.

Ours is pretty basic, but it's got nice looking railings that add to the look. I also plan to have some potted plants on the deck this summer.

I love the decks with different levels and stairs on them, they really have backyard appeal. I also think the built-in planters and perhaps a built-in water feature, such as a fish tank would look great.

It's good idea to have pergola top with raised sit-out in the shape of hexagon.

make your deck look like a garden..

With real growing plants in it.
That would surely be fun.
