Staining your deck

How often do you stain your deck? I hear every 2-3 years is the norm. Do you do it yourself or hire someone to stain for you?

We had a deck and stained once every 3 years.
It is something we always did ourselves by just getting cheap sponge mops, replacing the sponges with old T-shrt fabric, and using them for application!

My husband is our deck stainer. He does it every other year. He uses some type of a brush that goes on a broom handle so it goes on pretty quickly.

Staining a deck should be done about every second year depending on the amount of traffic it gets. Railings don't need it as much unless they are in the sunlight for most of the day. The sun is very hard on them.

Every other year seems a bit too often, especially if you have a large deck... I would probably do it once every 2-3 years, depending on the need. Our railings are good, but the floors do need some staining.

What would you do if the deck itself is worn off and needs staining but the railings are still very good? Would you stain just the deck itself?

I stain my deck about every 2 years, when it was new I did it every year to make sure it would have a good start. Also I use deck treatments when the seasons change. I do it myself.

We had a deck at our first house. We were there about 10 years and I think I stained it at least twice, maybe three times.
Some of the fence was getting pretty deteriorated, but the whole back yard always looked better after I stained it.

We have never stained our deck or porch. I personally like the natural look. However, we do apply Thompson's water sealer every few years and then put a nice sheer gloss finish on them to give it some gloss.
