Compact fluorescent light bulbs; do they really work?
« on: March, 02, 2009, 04:02:07 PM »
I have been looking into replacing all of our lighting with these new Energy Star light bulbs. But do they really work and are they worth the investment? With the higher costs of the bulbs verses conventional light bulbs would it be wise to buy
them? If anyone has them, I would like to know what you think.

I had been using around three fluorescent light bulbs for more than three months. I had never encountered a problem with them. However many of my friends reported that it doesn't live long as it was said though.

I do have most of my light bulbs changed over and do not have any problem with them.  They seem to last a very long time too as long as you don't put them in something that is on a dimmer switch.  I did this twice :-[

we have been using flourescent light bulbs, but we don't have problem with their longevity though. we actually save because they have longer life and does not require changing every now and then.

I think our compact fluorescent bulbs have worked out quite well.  I haven't had any burn out yet and we've had them for about a year.

What bothers me is the fact that the power company will probably raise rates to make up for all of the energy we are saving.

This is one of the huge jobs that we need to do in our house which has somthing like 99 light globes.
The energy savings alone will be huge! For now...I just continually chase after the kids reminding
them to switch of the lights!!!

Fluorescent light bulb saves 60% to 75% of energy then the other bulb. It come with many color and sizes to fit in any fixture. It also produce less temperature.  It also more cheaper.

A "normal light bulb" is also known as an incandescent light bulb. These bulbs have a very thin tungsten filament that is housed inside a glass sphere. They typically come in sizes like "60 watt," "75 watt," "100 watt" and so on.

The basic idea behind these bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through the filament. Because the filament is so thin, it offers a good bit of resistance to the electricity, and this resistance turns electrical energy into heat. The heat is enough to make the filament white hot, and the "white" part is light. The filament glows because of the heat -- it incandesces.
