Adding more insulation...
« on: March, 26, 2009, 01:51:32 PM »
We really want to add some insulation in the space between the ceilings and our roof.  We need to because our home was built in the 1930's, when people didn't put insulation in that space.

I think we should probably do the blow in insulation but it means renting the blower, along with buying the insulation, and this might be really expensive.  The other choice would be pulling down the existing ceiling, inserting rolls of fiberglass insulation, then replacing the ceiling with an updated look.

Which would you choose to do?

Is there an attic in your house?  Or is the ceiling and roof close together?

We blew in insulation to our whole house with our first home. It really wasn't that expensive and went in very easily.

We did blow-in insulation for the whole house, too. It is very messy, so probably for just one spot like that I would use standard insulation - easier to put in, no mess, no need to rent the blower.

This is going to be a difficult job to do. In this case I would pull down the ceiling and install those insulators instead of taking the other way. This way I think is less difficult and has few complexities than the other method.

I would say price them both. Will you be able to put up the existing ceiling and have it look nice? Or will you have to replace it. I would think that would cost more money than blowing it in?
I know we blew insulation in as well. We have a friend who does this type of work so we didn't rent.

It doesn't sound like there is an attic, just the space between the ceiling and roof.

Blow in insulation is great if you can do everything you need in one day!  If not, renting the blower might get pricey.

Anything that is fit to your budget. As long as you have the insulation, you wouldn't worry much about it because you won't see them as much. There are many products that you can try that can have great insulation but with a higher price but you'll probably save more in the long run.

I have always wanted to use that blower, just never had a reason. I think I would use the blower, just not to have to replace the ceiling. Which may turn out to be a big job, especially if your ceiling has designs on it.

Insulating would just come in handy but not for often. If it would just be to clean up the space between the ceiling and the roof, an occassional renting out of insulators would be advisable. We do just that here at home. We dont have our own insulator so we just rent.

maybe pulling down the existing ceiling is the best solution..no rental expenses and the likes and its forever in there..plus a good looking ceiling after wards..

If I were in your situation, I'll go with fiberglass insulation, because there are many advantages in this type of insulation.

One thing to remember with the fiberglass insulation is that sometimes less equals more.. Make sure you fluff up the insulation good. Some people think they should really pack it in there, but you need to fluff it for effectiveness.

Pulling down the ceiling is very big job and is very difficult too. I feel you can add some insulation in between the ceiling and the roof.

I think that mike's suggestion is good. If you go for pulling down the ceiling it could cost you more or even can harm you home. You can face more problems. If you wish then you can renew the wiring at your home.

flat roofs have been a daunting task for contractors and homeowners alike since they were invented. They are hard to waterproof, hard to maintain, and hard to insulate..
