Inexpensive methods...
« on: March, 26, 2009, 01:47:11 PM »
Even though we have double paned windows, we still try to keep our heat bill as low as possible.  We always buy the plastic film that you can apply to the insides of the windows.

The plastic is an added layer between the inner glass and the interior and we can't have enough layers when it's windy and cold, but there is an added benefit that many people don't think about.

When the home is closed up all winter, all the cooking and many other activities can make windows really dirty.  If there is plastic over them, they are fresh for spring when you remove the plastic!

There are lots of ways that you can insulate the home without spending too much. I use things like draft excluders at the bottom of the doors, and I change my curtains for thicker, lined ones during the winter.

I have not used the plastic tip yet. What kind of a plastic film do you buy? Does it stick easily? How about removing it later?

I use to use the plastic on our picture window of our old house.  It did make a huge difference in the amount of cold air that came threw  that window.  I never thought about the plastic keeping it clean~ I guess that is an added bonus.

We lived in an older house before, I wish I knew about this trick back then! It was hard to heat, and keeping the cold air out would help a lot.

That is a useful tip. There are many small innovative inexpensive stuffs invented by every households. I would certainly collect all these techniques soon and would make an e-book out of it.

I have seen the kits at hardware stores.  They have rolls of plastic and double sided tape.  All you do is measure the windows, put the tape up, then the plastic, then use a blow dryer to smooth the plastic out.

It's pretty simple!

I have taken to shutting off the lights whenever I leave a room. This may sound small but honestly it's a big help and it cuts down on my electric bill. My little children have even begun to mimic me shutting off lights when not used or when leaving a room. :D

I get so many oily stains near the window where the stove is. I can't practically put plastic in it because they are partitioned and having many pieces. Although your idea is great, there are also good glass panel films that can do the job.

Sounds expensive to me still. It was as if using the funds on something else wherein you still spent the same value of money.

Still i don't have plastic sheet for my windows. I always open the windows and put exhaust fans while i am cooking to be on safer side. If you are closing the windows while cooking try to be conscious with gas leakage.

I totally agrees with you mike closing the windows and cooking is not safer. I also use exhaust while I am cooking.
