Unplugging everything!
« on: April, 25, 2009, 08:45:03 AM »
I read once where someone had saved nearly $50 a month during the Winter just by unplugging everything every night before going to bed. Does doing this really help that much? I was under the assumption that appliances, TVs, PCs, etc. didn't use that much electric if they weren't turned on.

I don't know whether you can really save that much, but I know I do save some money if I unplug things, so I try to do that. My husband won't bother though.

well, I am not really sure too whether that would indeed save. But ill do just that from now on! That way too, our home would be safer with all appliances not used/needed-to-be-plugged unplugged and away from the sockets.

The easiest way to do this is to use power strips to plug your things into.  That way you just have to unplug each power strip in each room.   I have friends who swear that this saves them each month.

Wow, that is a lot of money to be saving. I agree with the power strip. It's the easiest way. I never really thought about it though. I turn off the computer each night and everything else that I can.  Of course not the fridge or anything like that.

I'd like to unplug the alarm clocks!   ;D

Haha, that's funny about alarm clocks! :D

I think the problem with not unplugging is that people don't see it as wasting money. There is no immediate expense, and when electric bill comes later on, they don't think that switching off lights and unplugging appliances would have helped much.

I have heard that unplugging everything does save money. I never knew this but have tried it--I do see a few dollars difference on my bill a month.

You should also unplug your cellphone cords when they are not charging your phones. We are good ones for leaving them plugged in. I was told it sucks up a lot of energy.

I've heard that it does truly save in the long run.  When I was a kid I was just brought up that way.  We don't unplug things like the tv and computer and such, but turn them off when we aren't using them for sure.  We do unplug stereos, hair dryers, toasters and etc when not in use though.

I don't think that electricity bill will reduce that much, but it will save some penny.

For a mom who's on tight budget like me, I can relate to this. And aside from saving a few bucks, I find it safe for my household. It's the simplest way of preventing possible hazards.

Yes, they can help...they are energy vampires that suck electricity. If you want to get a lower consumption, you should buy appliances with an energy star logo on it.
