If you are using an old water heater install heat traps on the hot and cold pipes at the water heater to prevent heat loss. Some new water heaters have built-in heat traps.

That is a great idea. Our water heater is new. I was thinking about getting one of the types that only heats water when you need it- but quickly. So you aren't paying to heat the water to sit in the tank.
Anyone have one of these?

I believe that would be using your water heater having the volume of water that you would just need and not having it filled up. You would surely waste a lot of energy if you do that. After some time, the excess would just cool off.

I don't have electric water heater in my home now. I have changed to solar water heater to save current. Solar water heater is very useful to me and also helps in saving electric bill.

Water heating is the most expensive one in most of the home. To reduce your water heater bill keep use of less hot water, turn down the thermostat on your water heater, insulate your water heater and buy a new efficient model.

Hi......
The heat without water in the water heater can cause damage to the gas systems. You can also use lye to dissolve sediment. Its very flammable and volatile. A plumber should use this chemical only.
Thanks
