Worried about energy costs?
« on: March, 26, 2009, 01:43:01 PM »
When you are house hunting all sorts of requirements for space and location can push out thoughts about the energy costs.  Often, people buy a home and are shocked to find out they will have to eat beans all winter to afford the heat bill.

Did you know that you can call the energy company and find out what the average monthly energy bill is?  It might not reflect the exact amount because rates tend to change, but it will give you an idea of what you might need to have on hand to pay for gas and lights!

It may also give you an idea of what improvements you'd like to make, once you move in!

Check the air tightness on doors and windows. If the doors and windows seal properly, you could save energy both in air conditioning and heating.

Property hunters seem to forget about running costs of property.

When I go looking at houses I always ask about average running costs and how often their boilers have been maintained.

I would love to own a huge georgian style house one dasy, but the costs of running it would out me right off.

It is the best idea to get the information directly from the electric and gas companies if possible.  If you go by what the previous owners say, they may be stretching the truth a little bit to encourage you to buy the property.

When we were shopping for a house, we considered energy costs. I tend to like older brick houses, but those eat too much energy to heat. We ended up building out own.

Calling the electric company to find out how much the heating bill is is a great idea.

Yes, this is an important factor to consider when buying a house. People must think about the energy costs of maintaining the house and not just about the initial costs of buying the house. I think you made a valuable point here.

I agree 100%, it is something that you should always do- whether renting or buying. Call the electric company and get the average bills. My buyer realtor did this for us when we were looking. There were no surprises when we got the first bill. Of course if you use more electric than the previous owners it will be higher.

How does a brick home eat up energy? Brick should be fairly close to having stone walls, which should slow heat loss.

Right?

Really? The company can do that for you? That's great then. Maybe I should often ask them about my bills.

Good idea? Whether it is rental or own house, we can call energy company to get our average monthly bill for normal consumption. This gives a rough idea of monthly usage. So every month we will check our electricity bill with this normal bill to assess our usage.

If you properly use the most energy consuming electronics items like Iron box, Microwave ovens, geyser etc, definitely you will reduce the energy cost.

Managing your energy cost can conserve energy and lower your energy cost. Make a few adjustment in your daily routine you can reduce the energy cost like turn off all appliances when you leave from your home.
