Replacing Sub Flooring
« on: February, 23, 2009, 01:27:10 PM »
I keep seeing these remodeling and "flip" shows where people tear out floors, while in demolition frenzy, only to discover they have rotted flooring.

How difficult is it to fix sub-flooring?

It seems like it should be pretty simple, but I heard that it can be a terrible experience.

You will probably not need to pull up the entire floor to do the subfloor repair. Simply removing the flooring that is covering the part of the subfloor that is damaged should be enough. However it can really became a difficult job if done incorrectly.

I think the people had torn up the floor, then discovered the rot.  Once you've already torn up the floor you almost have to replace the whole subflooring if there's any rot, don't you?  Doesn't rot spread?

You only need to replace the ones that are rotting, but make sure that you check floor joists before you close it up again.  Also if the sub floor is rotting, double check that there is no pipes leaking.  It sounds like water got in there somehow.

I don't have experience with sub flooring. You consult a Professional and get idea. It might be good i think so.

Yes, you would replace the underlayment and all rotted sub-floor areas. Easiest to do by the 4' x 4' sized areas.
