Interesting.  I didn't realize that they are getting cheaper.  Ours was put in our home and it has never worked right.  Then we called a repair man to take a look at it and he said it wasn't big enough to cool our whole house!  I wasn't impressed with our builders at that moment!
We haven't looked into getting a new one.  We just use it to cool the main floor and open windows upstairs.

This is so true. I have seen portable ones at Walmart for under $100 bucks.  Question, if you have central air but one room stays hotter, should you just buy an AC for that room or call for repairs?

Instead of spending amount for repair, you can go for new one. The electronic items once it get repaired it started to give some problems too.

Nowadays more competition in the market. Ac machine are more cheaper. I bought a new split ac it affordable cost only. If your machine create more problem go for new one machine.
