Creating Decor - Home Made Art
« on: April, 06, 2009, 04:02:04 PM »
Every morning I watch a little show called "That's Clever".  It gets my creative juices going and gives me a mental escape during the day, if need be.

Have you ever seen art at a gallery or for sale in stores that you know you could make yourself?

I saw this wire wall art by Jan Designs and, even though I wouldn't do this sort of piece, I am sure I could bend up a wicked dragon or star burst if I really planned the piece before I started bending things up.

If you were to make some art for your walls, what would you make?  From where would you draw inspiration?

Yes, I often see such designs that I think most people can easily do themselves. Sometimes I wonder who buys them, LOL! It's like, oh, thanks for the idea, I'll go make one. :)

I would love to do something like this. I am a big fan of

DIY and would recommend trying this project. I see so many things I could literally make myself, on shelves and they are charging a pretty penny for them. I once seen a Chinese word art painting for about $75 and I estimated the cost of canvas, paint and stencil it was about $5.

I haven't seen this show in particular, but I absolutely love watching home design shows.  I also love to do my own home design projects.  I'm working now on repainting some picture frames for my living room.

I like painting and other crafting things to do for my home. I once had my kids paint their hands and make hand prints on canvase and I framed it. It looks great! And why did I see something very similar in the store the other day?

I remember making curtains out of old greeting cards when I was a teen. I used them in my room, and they seemed nice there. I don't know whether I'd make something like this today though, it has this "kiddie" feel to it.

This one I have seen done by my mother. She cut some empty plastic soda bottles (the big ones) and made designs out of them and turned them into flower vases or knic-knack containers. They looked nice!

My best friend made these wonderful Christmas gifts and gave them to everyone last year. She went out and took pictures of everyday objects that resemble letters of the alphabet (a clock might be the letter "O" or the end of the handrail may form the letter "P"). Then she bought some picture frames from the the thrift store (we have a great one where we live!) and some matting from Michael's. Then she printed the pictures on high quality photo paper and arranged them to spell the gift recipient's names. It turned out sooooo good. I have to say I was skeptical of how nice it would look when she described it to me but the finished product looked like it was worth at least $40 from a home furnishings store!!

Bammer, I see you like to post a lot. Are you from Alabama by any chance? Just curious.

I really like making my own decor.  I watch a lot of shows online.  Threadbanger.com is great for DIY stuff, especially home decor.  The other day I made a picture to hang in the kitchen from a picture frame and some kitcheny feeling fabric I liked.  I've also made my own shelves in the past, as well as curtains.  I usually get my inspiration from seeing other people do things, or seeing things in the store and thinking "I can do that," just like you.

A lot of stationary or art supply stores sell really pretty greeting cards that can be framed yourself. You could buy a sheet of fancy wrapping paper to decorate your room. You also frame a piece of pretty fabric or wallpaper to decorate.
