How to make small space seem bigger?
« on: June, 14, 2009, 01:48:02 AM »
Our family is renting a unit which is somewhat small. I know there are a lot of ways to make a small space seem bigger through designing its interior. Can you suggest some?

Use dark colors, mirrors and open space to make your area look bigger.  Clutter especially makes spaces seem small.  I would suggest two things off the bat. 1.  Make certain you have plenty of storage.  Use spaces you normally wouldn't worry about, under end/coffee tables; Set plants on covered boxes or chests instead of a plant stand.  It is difficult to have a light airy look, and still have enough storage space.

2. Really consider reducing the 'stuff'.  Look at your possessions critically and if you don't have access to an outside storage unit, consider if they are useful/ beautiful or memorable.  If none of those things, give them to someone who will appreciate them better.

Good luck!

Use of dark colors will solve the purpose, dark colors are receding in nature they will make the small place to look biggger. Also avoid the clutter in small place.

Create space and contrast by painting different areas to give each their own zone. Paint your entryway or hallway a fun color, the same for the kitchen and small nooks. It will seems like creating more space within your  space, instead of just one overall color.

hi here are some points that you can work out to make your room bigger. First, your furniture. Make sure there's an open space in the middle and there is no furniture blocking the pathway. For wall painting, blue and cream colors can be a good combination. And lastly, the lighting.  Let natural lights flow into the room. You can also add on lamps that will bring colors and focus. Another technique , is putting up large mirror that can give illusion of depth.

hope this helps  ;)

To make your place look bigger, you have to go lighter colors. Add a mirror on the wall with a window close by or a lamp underneath it. The light will reflect into the mirror giving the effects of a larger room. Another important factor is not to put to much furniture into the room.  Remember, keep the colors light, and add the darker colors with throw pillows, and decor and accents.

How to make a small space seem bigger is an age old question. This can be done many different ways including using lighter shades of paint. By having lots of lights or natural light can also do the trick. Another idea most people do not know about is the way you lay your hardwood floors. The trick to install the hardwood floors on a diagonal to what ever direction the room is flowing.
