tile or vinyl

I want to replace the floor in my entry hall. You can see the kitchen floor, which is sheet vinyl and the living room floor, which is hardwood, from the hall. Currently, the hall is slate, in a dark irregular pattern. I'm thinking of changing it to ceramic or marble, in a lighter shade, but I'm worried that it won't look right with two other kinds of flooring beside it.

Considering that you have hardwood in the living room, why dont you do it with hardwood (or wood!)-designed vinyl? that way, there would be continuity and solid theme along.

I wouldn't go with vinyl. I think that tile is much more durable and maybe in the future you will want to change your kitchen to either hardwook or tile.

I prefer tile as well - I like the neat look of it. It might take longer to install, and cost a bit more, but I think it is worth the time and effort. You can choose a nice pattern, or create one and make your home unique.

I have to agree, tile is much nicer and easier to take care of. However your concern is valid, but with what you have already, you are in the same situation. If you are unhappy with the three different types of flooring currently, I'd go with matching one of the others, wood or vinyl.

Vinyl tiles are easy to install anywhere. It also gives nice look to your floor. Remove existing flooring surfaces prior to the application of new tiled surfaces. Existing floor may contain asbestos.

I would stick with the hardwood but to define the space I might consider a diagonal pattern. Also would have a small cut out done in tile by the entry way as a water area. But would use wood throughout the remaining entry way and hallway. Keep the tile in the kitchen where spills are more likely because of its durability and because grout can always be updated.
