What really bothers you?
« on: February, 23, 2009, 12:34:42 PM »
I can't stand walking into someone's home and feeling as if they bought all of the furnishings at the same time.  It rates right up there with buying all of the pieces for a bedroom set.  It makes everything look so staged that the welcoming feeling of a home is totally absent.

I like to buy one or two pieces at a time to build a homey feeling.

What sorts of decor issues do you have?

What really bothers you when you see it?

I hate clutter.

When people have shelves full of curios instead of books, I tend to wonder about their IQ.

I know it isn't fair but that's my first reaction!

Ornaments. My mother had lots of tiny little pot animals all over the house when I was growing up.

I understand that everyone has their own individual tastes but this was way over the top. I don't have a single ornament in my house. My mother probably scared me for life!

I don't like people having too many shelves and the shelves were rendered empty with nothing in it. It makes me to feel why does people have so much of decorated shelves and have nothing in them.

I don't like the pretense of some people's homes.

I guess it could be certain books chosen to be on display, or certain pieces of art that suggest a taste for things that may not really be experienced by the person decorating.

I prefer closed shelves.  I dislike homes with glass shelves showing off everything inside.  Maybe because I am more of privy person.

and pictures of each member of the entire clan and every activity is framed and displayed on the wall...

I've been surprised at how large some family portraits are. I mean photographs as opposed to paintings. I've seen them almost poster sized.

My biggest pet peeve is also clutter.  It drives me insane.  I don't want anyone looking at things on my shelves and I also don't want to see anyone elses either.

I hate clutter... I always believed that one's room is a reflection of one's state of mind.

it totally depends upon the furnishings they purchase at a time. but when they purchase at same time. they'll try to match the items.

I bought all of my furniture for my living room at the same time.  I wish I had a photo to show you.  You would love it!  It is very homey, not staged.  I bought two chocolate brown recliners and a red couch.  I have a funky footstool that is the same pattern as the funky pillows I have.  It is a very warm atmosphere, not a staged or cool one.

I do know what you are talking about though.  My MIL has her living room like this and I feel like I have to sit up straight and be very careful when in her house.  It isn't a welcoming feeling.

I can't stand going into someones house that has lots of dust and clutter.  I think it seems too dirty to me and makes me feel uncomfortable.

I, too, really hate a house that doesn't look lived in. Everyone has clutter - some people are better at hiding it than others! I bet, if I opened some closets or cupboards in those supposedly "clutter free" houses, the piles would come tumbling out!!

I love the personal touches in people's homes - pictures, knickknacks.  Those things tell a story about the lives of the people that live there.  While I don't like clutter, I think personal items just add color and emotion to a home.  It's might be nice to walk into a home right out of a magazine, but are you comfortable there?
