Setting Up a Clothes Line
« on: April, 09, 2009, 08:48:49 PM »
I have never used one before, but I want to now that I have my own home.  My main question is, if my backyard is really shaded can this work? Or do I need full sun, I am further north so I don't know if the hot air in the summer will do it or if I need a super sunny spot.

Any help and advice appreciated.

Having your clothes line in the full sun is of course the best, but not necessary. The clothes will dry in a shaded area as well, especially if the weather is warm, it will just take a little longer.

It doesn't matter if you don't have any sun. If the air is dry, or there is a slight breeze your washing will dry outside without problems.

I agree, sun is great as it will help in drying the clothes. The sun beating on the clothes also takes out color (fades). I even hang my clothes out in the Spring, when the sun isn't all that hot. It's the wind or breeze that dries clothing.
I love this time of year, nothing beats hanging out clothes on the line. Saves energy and smells great!

I used to dry jeans outside, but my husband said he did not like how hard and coarse sun-dried jeans were, so I no longer do that. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I think that the sun will definitely help and speed up the drying process, but during the summer months it will be so hot that the clothes will dry.

Another thing I don't appreciate is bird droppings... Come on, I have just washed these clothes - I don't need that to happen! :D

It would be helpful if you put the clothes line where it can be exposed to the sun. Clothes will dry faster because of the heat. Of course, if you place it in a shaded area, the clothes will also dry up but it takes longer.

We just moved back in November and now have a big front yard that already had a clothesline up. I am soo thrilled with this! :D Now, when it is warm and sunny I don't even turn my dryer on. Also, my back porch is covered and shady, but I can hang clothes up outside there and they will still dry. So, as long as it is nice and warm outside, you can still dry clothes in a shady spot.

I miss my clothesline.  We had one at our old house right by the swimming pool.  It was great to just throw the wet towels on the line instead of bringing them into the house.

The clothes will dry as long as the air is warm.

indeed the semell of sun-dried clothes is nice for me! but just be wary that sun-drying could also cause the clothes to fade. so those delicate clotes, have them air-dried instead. that the use os shades during the heat season. ;)

I always hang out my jeans and they aren't funny feeling. I use Downy fabric softener though. I found it to be the best. I'm wondering what kind of fabric softener you use?
Yes the sun does fade clothing. So does washing them.

if your backyard is shady but very windy then its still possible..i mean it can dry clothes also especially if its already been spin dry prior to hanging..direct sunlight is good also but only to white linen/clothes since the colored ones for sure will fade through the scorching heat of the sun..

if its shady then the wind will do their job in drying them..but if you have dryer or spinner then more advantageous since it will dry faster without the rays of the sun to make it dry..

Having the clothes line directly below the sunlight is the ideal place.

It will dry the clothes quickly and also smells good.
