We use a water hose - there are sprinklers that you can quickly put in, then turn the water on; after an hour or so, we'd move the hose and water a different area.

I saw these great planters on a home improvement show. They have reservoirs so that you only put water in when needed, and the "ambient" moisture of the sold determines how much water is used.
Pretty cool, eh?

If the area gets shade, you could water during that time to reduce the amount you lose to immediate evaporation from the hot sun.

I am also looking for ways to keep my lawn properly hydrated, for now we use a hose system, which waters every hour and we just relocate the hose many times during the evening. I am also looking into purchasing a bigger coverage area sprinkler.

We just watering cans. We water every night. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it and we are not wasting water by running a sprinkler system. I think if our garden was bigger, we would have to do something different.

Soaker hoses work really well too. If you can anchor them down to the ground before you mulch and cover them up with the mulch they work especially fine! Run them in the early morning or in the evening for less waste from evaporation too!

Sprinkler sprayers and rotators are available. You fix permanently in the garden to spray water frequently. Show your garden to the sprinkler suppliers, get idea and then decide to put sprinklers.
