painting the garage floor
« on: January, 22, 2009, 04:34:54 PM »
I've decided to re-paint the garage in my house and I want to add that epoxy floor paint to the slab; you know the one with the colored flakes in it. Does anyone have experience with this and if so what would be a good brand to use?

I repainted my garage about 4 months ago. We used two of the Rustoleum Brand Epoxy Floor Kits which I purchased from Home Depot. It has held up well; just remember that one kit is for a one car garage. The key in getting the paint to stick is all in the prepping. Be sure that the floor is extra clean before you start the etching process. After etching, rinse the floor with clean water and use a push squeegee to remove all of the standing water. Let air dry before starting the painting process.

I agree the Rustoleum Epoxy Floor Kit is the best. My husband painted our garage with it last year. We chose the gray color paint with the blue, black, and white flakes. We have a two car garage and your right it took two kits to complete the job. But the results were amazing! It sure made that old garage floor look great. I would recommend this to anyone.

OK.. please tell me, why would you paint the garage floor?  Is it for the looks? Does it make the floor stronger, less apt to chip and break?

Just curious. Our garage floor is just concrete- it's not painted. If it will make it last longer- I'm going to suggest it to my sig other.

It give the garage floor a clean look. People paint the floors in both new and old houses. If you have an old house where the slab has cracks, you can fill them with a crack filler and then paint over it. Makes a nice looking upgrade to the garage.

Makes sense... so it's only to make it look better. It really doesn't prolong the life of the concrete or whatever the floor is made of?  I'm not sure I would put that money into it then- unless we were thinking of selling. We do a lot in the garage- staining for wood work, car repairs, etc. I'm afraid it wouldn't stay pretty for long.

I must admit I have done things like paint the garage floor before!
I did it because I had nothing better to do!
These days I have so many other areas to paint that I will not be bothering with the garage floor so it can stay...concrete a la natural!!!
Good luck with that though!

By painting the garage floor will it make it not slippery?

Our garage floor is so smooth if it gets wet, it gets really slippery.

I haven't actually used any of this paint, but a store near me put some on the sidewalk, on patch, where people walked a lot, so everyone could see how it held up and how it felt to walk on it.

It wasn't nearly as slick as I thought it might be, but I am still uncomfortable with glossy paint on floors.

I guess I am too clumsy to take the chance!

It definitely makes the floor easier to clean. And it does change the looks quite a bit.

No one answered Antk- Does it make it less slippery too? Things are always getting on the garage floor- Fluids, snow, etc. Will painting it make it less slippery. I'm wondering if you mixed paint with a touch of sand and painted it on- that might do the trick.

kris, that's a great idea.  I know the glossy gray industrial paint that people use on garage floors is so slippery.  The newer kits with the flakes sound like there is enough texture to help prevent slipping.

Use epoxy paint for garage floor. It looks nice and easy to clean up the oils and grease,  also gives sophisticated look to the floor.

In the garage floor use oil paint and distemper. It wont allow the dust particles and also easy to clean the floor. No one care the garage floor and is always dirty. Make painting with quality paint then keep it clean.
