Repainting the Interior

Remember the key to repainting a room with a new color is to use a primer first to cover the old paint. I have found the best primer for interior painting is Kilz Premium. There are different type of Kilz available at Home Depot, but they are not all the same. Spend the extra money and buy the Kilz Premium brand. You will not be disappointed. You can apply the primer with either a brush, roller, or airless spray gun.

I love the Kilz brand. It is a bit more expensive though- I've never bought their primer. We are tearing our kitchen apart soon- Would you think you need to use this as a primer on new walls as well? or just paint?

I've used a spray can version of Kilz to cover a water stain on a stucco ceiling.
It worked well, but I've never primed a whole surface with one of their products.

I don't think I have ever used a primer before painting, but then I have never made drastic color changes.
Does primer help protect against mold?

Kilz is a very good brand and is very good for stopping any bleeding though. As for priming on already painted walls is not necessary unless it is an oil based paint that is being covered up. New walls that have not had paint on them yet will have to have a primer on them but just a cheaper drywall sealer is fine.

Painting...I will have lots of that to do once we start the hige job of renovating our new home...wallpaper in almost every room.
60 squares of hosue makes for a lot of repainting once the wallpaper comes off!
Personally I want the easiest and quickest way to do the job that looks really good though!

Since we are painting the walls of our new house, we did not have to worry about something to cover the old paint - there is none, we are doing base and 1st coat. But I'll keep this tip in mind for the future!

If you are repainting the walls in the same basic shade, no priming is necessary. If you are changing the shade completely, you may require to remove the old paint by scraping. In this case a primer is a must for the new paint.

A primer is really only required for woodwork. If you are changing colours then a cheap white emulsion is far more cost effective.

Your walls is already painted dark in color and you want to cover that dark color primer is needed. Kilz primer is best.

Interior painting presents a variety of textures, styles and techniques. New home does not need two coating. If already painted your home use primer to hide previous painting. Then paint with different color.
