Cutting Salt
« on: May, 23, 2009, 02:48:20 PM »
Summer is probably the worst time of year to to this, but we are trying to cut the amount of sodium we eat.

Does anyone have recipes for traditional barbecue/summer potluck/ picnic dishes that are low in salt?

I don't have any actual recipes but Mrs. Dash makes a variety of salt free seasonings that you might want to try!  Or you could come up with some marinades with oil, vinegar and salt free seasonings too that would spice up some bbq stuff.  Good for you too for trying to cut salt intake.

Hi there, I`m new to this forum. I live in Florida. My hubby had to cut back on his salt intake so he bought Morton salt substitute. I never use salt on anything but he loves his salt. He says it`s not bad. You might try that for your recipes.

I am one of those people who has to have some salt on their meat dishes, especially grilled, but I have found out that when we use salt-based mixed seasoning, with onion, garlic, and some other things in it, I need much less of it, and the steak tastes wonderful.

I have to agree about Mrs Dash.  I always try to add other spices instead of salt.  When I use garlic, I use garlic powder instead of garlic salt too.

I've never been able to cut out salt completely, but I use less when I use onion and garlic. ALSO just about any  barbecue recipe can be made with less salt or a salt substitute.
