Stroganoff

Does anyone like to make Stroganoff? We love it, it is yummy and filling, very good for winter when you come home cold and hungry.
You make the sauce frying 1 lb hamburger meat, adding to it 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 jar of sour cream, and chopped onion roasted in 1/2 stick of butter. I usually add some salt and garlic powder, too.
While you cook the sauce, boil 1 pack of egg noodles. Drain, mix with the sauce, and serve!

I have not had stroganoff in years. It sounds so good to me right now. It is suppose to snow tonight, so maybe stroganoff would be a good dinner. Thanks for the idea.

That sounds like a great comfort food. I think it's a great idea to keep staples like mushroom soup on hand for recipes like that. I buy it by the flat at Costco.
Have you ever made Stroganoff with cubed beef? I'd definitely find that more of a challenge to get it to come out right.

No, I haven't tried making it with cubed beef... I only use hamburger meat. It would probably take some adjustment to make it work.
I use the Great Value version of cream of mushroom soup, it's cheaper and it works great.

I love stroganoff, but I make it completely differently to the way you do it here. I use the sauce with turkey, steak, pork or chicken.

Wow bubble, this does sound like a completely different recipe! How do you make the sauce? Do you still use egg noodles as base?

No, we usually serve it with rice.
You start off by coating pieces of your meat in seasoned flour, then fry them off in a little butter. Add onions and cook slowly. When the onions have softened add some chopped mushrooms (I also add other veggies such as peppers). Mix all this together and pour over some cooking cream. When the cream is warmed add a teaspoon of mustard, black pepper, stir, then serve.
It's an English recipie!

Years ago I experimented with a cubed beef stew that was kind of like a stroganoff, I guess.
I started with tomato sauce and used a slow cooker. When it turned out it was pretty good, and a variation from the traditional versions I've had.
The above posts are making me hungry here.

My version of cubed beef stew includes diced potatoes, onion, and some mayo for sauce. It is yummy and very filling.

I have used both cubed beef and hamburg (cheap night) for stroganoff. I have never used cream of mushroom soup though.
I usually fry up the meat and some onions and mushrooms, then add beef gravy and sour cream. I serve it on either noodles, rice or toast.
It is a really simple and cheap meal. I haven't made it in a long time though. I should add that to my grocery list.

Wow that does sound good. What I like the best is it sounds super easy and quick. A perfect meal for crazy nights when you are running here and there.
I'm not big on cream of mushroom soup, can you use any type of cream soup?

Kris~ Don't use cream of soup at all. I don't. I use sour cream and brown gravy. Sometimes I use mushroom gravy as well. You just want to use enough of both to give yourself enough gravy to have on the rice or noodles.
Sometimes if I get it a little to think, I will use a bit of milk to thin it out.
It is great as a leftover for lunch as well.

Wow, such a variety of recipes!
Yes, you can leave the cream soup out if it's not your thing - just go with sour cream, it should work just as well. I also add a can or two of mushrooms, both my husband and I love them.
